Richard Clayton, ex-Locomotive Software wrote into comp.sys.amstrad.8bit on Wednesday the 14th of January 2004:

I can't locate any contemporary records, but the file dates on the
source bear this out, as does the relevant chapter in the Alan Sugar
biography (and David Thomas - the author - interviewed us at length to
get all the detail when our memories were fresher than they are now...)

The CPC464 ROMs were shipped off to Amstrad in Brentwood Essex from
Leatherhead Surrey (by DataPost ... we didn't have FTP back then!) to
arrive on the contracted date of the third Saturday in January 1984.
They were then sent by air to the Far East for production.

ie: we finished the software of the 464 exactly twenty years ago today,
on Friday 14th January 1984, less than five months since our involvement
in the project had started.

So, it was not the release date, but the date the system software was finished for shipping.

(hmm.. although some of these machines were tape based, this fits best in the CP/M hierarchy, right?)

Err No, that's why there is another 'Other' Catagory for
system's like this! :)

Cheers,
CP/M User.
