What will run on a nearly unexpanded ROM 00 IIgs?

I have two of these nice units, though only one monitor, RAM card and set of drives (one each 3.5" and 5.25"). Everything I’ve seen online indicates that the IIgs software from Apple needs either more RAM than I have or a hard drive. Is that assessment accurate? If it is accurate, what _can_ I run instead on these machines, and where would I find disk images of it? I did get the ADT serial transfer trick working once, but had no software to try at that time.

Uh. Yeah, that’d do it. I am somewhat embarrassed to admit that never even occurred to me — I’d been thinking exclusively in terms of native 65816 mode software. Thanks for the tip!

Even for IIgs software you just need a 1MB RAM card and all is fine.

That's exactly what you can run, and not too much more. Just about all the GSOS software required a (free, at the time) upgrade to ROM01 to work.
