486 tablet, worth $40? (IBM Thinkpad 730T)

very interesting, as main "mobile product specialist" for my company, I'd love to play with this. I would HIGHLY doubt any sort of linux support for the touch screen. I cant even get good response from my motion 1700 in Ubuntu 10.10.

Batteries, Chargers, ac adapter, pen, and carrying case.
I would totally throw $40 on that.
I know the 100mhz TE can handle Windows 95 but I'm not sure how fast the T is.

Complete it may be worth it. Just a few years ago, the "junk guys" at the computer shows would bring pallets of these things in and sold them off for $15-20 a piece as-is.

I would offer $30 for it since it is complete. If you don't like it I am sure it would fetch $30 on ebay easy.

I offered the guy $30 and he took it. So I'm the proud owner of an "ipad"

as soon as I finish my lunch i'm going to go over this thing like an obsessive compulsive off his meds. everything "looks" okay but i'll find out and post pictures. ^.^

So the last owner of this thing HAD to have been Joe Camel, this thing stinks! But I have pictures! First set is me taking thing out of the case and what not. I did find a BRAND NEW pen in a storage compartment. WOOT! I am however worried about the one real bad wear spot on the screen. I havent look that hard at it, it "looks" like I can peel the plastic off and replace it with a new screen protector. The actual screen is made by Wacom. It posts, but has a garbled screen. It looks like it has 8MB of installed ram.

Now the person before me had decided to open this up. there are a LOT of screws missing as well as the latches that hold the batteries in. I did take it apart so I could wash the stink off of it. I was about 75% successful. I can sit in the same room as it and not gag anymore so that's good. It still posts after I put it back together, so there's that. The processor is a 486SX-25. And its written on the side of the box: IBM 430T. hmm...

Anyway after washing and drying all the plastic parts its back together and a LOT cleaner!

first thing I need to solve is the garbled screen. I have three pc card slots, probably type1, and 1 slot for a removable ram card. I'm kicking myself in the ass over this because last week I had an opportunity to get one and I diddn't becasue I diddnt think there would ever be a reason I needed it. BLEH. I know I'm going to get a compact flash adapter for storage, as you might have noticed when I tore it open, it has practically no storage that I could see. Card #2 will probably be ethernet and I might just toss a 56k modem in slot #3 just because.

But does anyone know anything about the screen before I screw it up myself? I'm probably going to need to find one thats broken, but with a good case so I can salvage the battery connectors. :p

this is the only thing on the screen:

(c) IBM corporation 1983, 1993

07808KB ok

[9990305

the 999 part only comes up after a few seconds, and I assume its probably an error code of some sort.

the controls work, the contrast, backlight, and invert. (its monochrome screen) So its not dead, just has a booboo somewhere. :p

I had good luck with Win95 and OS2 on several of these, using a PCMCIA HD.(You will need an IBM Floppy to load the OS.)
Keep an eye open for the "Hard Case" accessory.(Almost all have a Kodak Diconix Printer)
I might have some odd bits of spare bits and pieces too.Let me know if you are looking for anything.
