Windows 3.11 locking up Compaq LTE 4/50CX laptop

I recently purchased a Compaq LTE Elite 4/50Cx to use for on-the-go email and fax and whatnot. Anyway it had a (very) bucherd copy of Windows 95 on it apon arival so I had to install something else. I really want to go with Windows 3.11 to save on resources but the problem is that it locks up the system immediately after install. I have all default settings at this point and the system just seems to lock up as soon as it loads the file explorer. Any ideas as to the cause of this problem?

6.22... Also I've noticed now every time I try to install Windows it gives me an access denied error on "MMSYSTEM.DLL". I've tried using a different copy of 3.11 but to no avail

Is you version W3.11 an upgrade and or standalone? Either way, I would reformat and reinstall. Of course if it's an upgrade you may have install DOS first or at least feed it the DOS install disks when it routine asks for them.

Does Windows work in Standard Mode by typing "win /s" at the MS-DOS prompt?

Bumping this old thread for anyone else having this issue, it’s a know issue with some 486 Compaq notebooks and there is a patch available, that can be downloaded here:

This worked great on my LTE Elite 4/75CX.
