If I set the MB switches to monochrome, will this card run a 5151 or do I need a monochrome only adapter? The 5150 I just restored came with the GB200, but I don't have a CGA. For now I have a Paradise VGA installed and a CRT monitor. Want a period correct setup, so I need to figure out the route I have to take.

Also, how common is it for the IBM monochrome adapter to fail? The reason I ask is that most of the reasonably priced ones on ebay are sold as is/untested. I know from experience that some sellers will sell a known non-functioning item by noting it is untested and as is with no returns. I just got a non-working 5151 and am determined to revive it. Got the oscilloscope out and the service manual. When the monitor arrives I'm hoping it will be an easy fix.

Thanks!

Timcanalley,

It looks like the GB200 (color card) is a direct clone of IBM CGA. So, you do need a monochrome adapter. This eBay listing has some pictures of the manual, which confirm that:

As to your second question, I don’t think it’s very common for an MDA card to fail. I would suggest a Hercules monochrome card, though, as they can use the same monitors, and the Hercules is much more flexible than MDA.
