To my web site I have added a page that describes the various controllers that Xebec made for the IBM 5160 (XT).
The photos will help people identify their controller to us. I will add to it later, and probably move it to the VCF wiki.

Goto http://members.dodo.com.au/~slappanel555/ then select the "IBM 5160 - IBM/Xebec HDD Controllers Supplied" link.

It should be noted that the physical controller for variation 2 and 3 is similar, except for the DIP switches and the BIOS-extension version. It should also be noted that the drivetypes set by the DIP-switches are also defined by the BIOS-extension which resides in the ROM.

The default drive parameters (off-off; or no switches installed) for the variant 1/2 BIOS extension is entry 3. The other entries were not defined with numbers in the AT BIOS drive-type standard, but there are physical drives that matches most of them:

Entry 0, 5MB: Segate ST-406, Miniscribe M1006, Miniscribe M2006, NEC D5114
Entry 1, 25MB: Unknown, 375 cylinders and 8 heads.
Entry 2, 15MB: Segate ST-419
Entry 3, 10MB: Segate ST-412, Miniscribe M1012, Miniscribe M2012, CMI CM5412, AT BIOS HDD type 1

I've made some changes to the web page.

Something interesting:
The drive that IBM supplied with variation #1 and #2 was the Seagate ST-412.
The ST-412 specs indicate that WPC is to start at cylinder 128.
According to Mueller's 'Upgrading and Repairing PCs', the variation #1 and #2 controllers ("10MB Hard Disk Controller") started the WPC at cylinder 0.

Ha, looks like the site is as dead as a dodo ;)

I'm trying to identify a XEBEC hard disk controller. The only two numbers are 104836 and handwritten44l-2197 (the serial number I assume). It is a long card with three sets of jumpers.

If I'm not using the forum properly as in posting this question into an old thread etc, perhaps the moderators would advise and do whatever is necessary, many thanks.

Xebec and 104836 tie in with the 'XEBEC AMERICA 1210A (ASSY. 104836), 1210B (ASSY. 104836)' entry in the 'Total Hardware 99' (TH99) database at [here].

So, a Xebec 1210A or Xebec 1210B.

The drive selection jumper set will be the set at the far right of your photo. The particular BIOS ROM fitted to your card control the drive geometries available to you. In that regard, the 'DRIVE TYPE SELECTION FOR BIOS 104959/102168' table in the TH99 entry is not expected to apply to your card, because I see neither 104959 nor 102168 on the ROM's of your card. A way to see what drive geometries are in the BIOS ROM of your card, is to use the /ROMLIST switch of SpeedStor software, an example of ROMLIST use shown at [here].
