I have a PC-AT that is missing the five or so screws needed to hold the case on. Does anybody know what size screws I need to purchase to replace them?

Sometimes you can find them in a hardware store, but usually they won't look quite right, because the hex end will be too big. The original screws have a shoulder and the hex head is a little smaller. I've found them online that were close. I'm not exactly a "rivet counter" as the vintage Land Rover guys say it, but I found some that were close enough.

I bought some of these recently:

There are some others linked in this old thread that others have purchases:

Fry's Electronics should have them. They used to carry them, but lately they have been low on stock items.

The Fastenal ones are stainless; not a physical problem, but if you want to preserve the original look, you want galvanized steel. (have that "gray" color).

That looks more like it, but did the 5170 use the smaller head ones for the slots like the 5150? I can't recall. These look to be 1/4" heads, while the 5150 slot uses something like 3/16" heads.

5150, 5160 & 5170 use the smaller head screws for EVERYTHING it seems. mounting the drives, expansion cards, motherboard & PSU. The larger screws are used for the case cover only. early 5150's use 2 screws, the later 5150, 5160 & 5170 use 5.

Yeah, they did. I can't seem to find any reference to the head size on fastenal. I'd bet that they do sell them, but I've no idea what search term to use to find them.

Check out the photo. One of those is the original case screw, the other is a new one I bought. The stainless vs galvanized makes it obvious when you see then next to each other, but I don't think if all the screws in the back are the same you'd be hard pressed to call them out as not original.

The slot bay screws were the right thread, but definitely not the right head. They are too big. So the hunt for those continues.
