Looking for IBM 5155

Hello there!

As many of you know, my search for an Apple //c was recently satisfied.

However, after seeing pictures of an IBM 5155 portable on these forums, I set my sights on acquiring one of those systems. Apparently, Gib purchased his complete, working system for $80, and that price sounds good to me.

There are two reasons I want one of these systems: because I've been fascinated with them ever since I was extremely young, and because MS-DOS is my favorite OS. :)

I'd sure be happy to double the size of my collection! If you have one of these systems, please post here or PM me.

Thanks,
WMH

Thanks!

I'd seen that machine, but for some reason it seemed a little fishy (and real dirty, for that matter.)

I think I'll pass, but thanks for the link.

Yes, steer clear of that one. The "Bumper" on the left side is missing, and it does look a little dirty. I find that items that look a "little dirty" on Ebay, are VERY dirty when they arrive. Also, down further in his add, the seller say's he's asking $250 plus shipping. He must have a reserve price. Or maybe he made a mistake and will renig when it sells for less than $250.

Alright, thanks for the heads-up, ibmapc.

I thought it looked a little suspicious.

Does anyone here have an IBM 5155 they'd be willing to sell for $100 or less?

My //c is getting kind of lonely, all by itself... :)

I will, of course, pay shipping costs.

I know that you probably know this already, but here are the current links I found on eBay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-5155-Po...03180880?pt=Laptops_Nov05&hash=item2c66cb9c50

By these listings, the Sellers seem to think these machines are worth quite a bit more than $100. :)

I do not know anything about the "real" worth of IBM PCs, so I can't help much with that. Perhaps that one that is listed "as is" for $245 could be a restoration project?

Recently there have been quite a few 5155's on ebay, but sellers have obviously decided these are extremely rare which they aren't. They're not extremely common, but definitely not THAT rare!

Keep in mind that essentially these were XT's with a handle. The motherboard is pure XT. IF a hard drive is included, it's aftermarket.

Also, the floppy drives are slightly skinnier than a regular unit so if you need a replacement, you're going to be looking for a while.

Another thing to look for is the "shutter" on the back that covers the ports. That's one of the things that tend to disappear first.

Good luck on your quest!

Thanks for the advice, Curtis! I'll be looking for the shutter, and make sure that the floppy drives are present and working.

Thanks for the links, smp. I have seen those systems.

I would think $100 is a fair price, as this system isn't overly rare.

Just wanted to notify you guys that I'm currently in negotiations for a 5155 with a user on this forum. (Not telling who it is as I like to keep PM's private.)

I'm still open to any offers of course.

If the deal goes through, I'll post some info on this thread.

Thanks again, guys.

Well, I was offered a 5155 for $100 plus shipping, but the user who made the offer never responded back.

It's been a couple of days now, so I just wanted to bump this thread and let everyone know I'm still open to offers.

I hate to keep bumping this thread so much, but I still haven't heard anything...

Keep your eye out on auctions or craigslist. It can take a while for the right offer to pop up but eventually you'll find a nice one or one with an acceptable make offer option. I've found a fair number of folks in different states via cragslist and once you chat with them if they're open to the trust factor (like old school auctions lol) I've had very good luck buying from folks and them being fine with shipping things. Again it just takes a phone call or something to get the trust factor.

Thanks for the advice, barythrin. I've been watching Craigslist, and I'll take that into consideration.

My main reason for bumping this thread repeatedly is to try to get the attention of the user who was considering my offer. (Just so you know, this user is a senior member, not someone drifting through.) Maybe I'll get another PM from someone here, but I doubt it...
