If you have such drive (and ADF) that you would like to sell please PM me, and of course I'll pay s/h. Or if you don't want to sell what you have but can share the FRU with me that would be great too.

Thanks

There is a special dos driver for CD drives on the ibm scsi cards. Its not that hard to find with google. As for an ADF, its not needed for the drive itself.

I have an original 2x drive in a similar model unit. As soon as my life calms down a bit here in a few days i'll un bury it and have a gander for you.

Thanks luckybob. Having the FRU was make my search less frustrating and save money.

Would you know if any scsi cdrom drive would work with this system? There's tons on the web; just don't want the hassle of buying and it doesn't work. I remember the PS/2 systems are proprietary and a bit persnickety.

Yep any scsi cd drive will work. I personally use a 40x Plextor in my model 95. Still required the special scsi cd dose driver, but it works a treat.

Thanks for the info luckybob. Ebay has plenty, and I believe I saw some 40x Plextor scsi drives. Some were as little as $29.00.

Hello
krebizfan.

Can't remember if I responded didn't want to seem rude. Eh my mistake re: ADF programs. Thanks for those links - very helpful.

sorry for teh delay, but I actually have 2 of these drives. one in my 57 and another in a special parallel => scsi converter box. both have teh same numbers.

P/N: 92F1426
FRU: 92F0084

both are 2x caddy drives.

Hello luckybob.

I'm running OS/2 2.1 on my Mod 57 (9557); I received another scsi cdrom today; hook it up, set the ID and the system (reference) programs configures it fine, but OS/2 keeps telling me drive not ready - something to that affect. Do I need to do something with the config.sys and autoexec.bat files?

I'll search around for this drive with the fru and pn you listed. I take it these are IBM drives? I'd rather have IBM.

Thanks

yes, they are ibm drives. they look just like this: http://s11.photobucket.com/user/ballsandy/media/Computer related/CGS_0523.jpg.html (shameless google image search)

I have an IBM external SCSI CD-ROM drive that looks different than the one in that image. I don't know what the IBM part number is. Looks like there was a label that was removed. I got this drive with some RS/6000 7012 & 7013 systems. Inside the drive is a Toshiba XM-3101BME that was manufactured for IBM with a blue caddy eject button and blue volume control dial. On the back it has that weird IBM recessed SCSI connector. Well, the connector is standard but there is only one connector and it is recessed so you need a special IBM cable that is deep enough to plug in and has a pass-through to attach a terminator or daisy chain to another device.

I'll have to test the drive to see if it works. If it does I don't really have any need for it.

Many "Unix" work stations such as the DEC MicroVAX and Sparc Station and possibly the RS6000 need a "special" CD Drive that understands multiple sector sizes. I forget the details, but I do know that Toshiba CD ROMS feature on the list, so it may be the drive won't work with OS/2....

I am using one on my DEC MicroVAX and it has a not that the Parity jumper changes the block size, so if it doesn't work on a PC it may be it just needs a jumper changing. Also the older CD-ROM drives do not like CD-RW and some types of CD-R so make sure you test a real CD-ROM. It took me three goes to make a CD that would boot and let me restore VMS to my MicroVAX 3100.

As I recall (it's been a long time), I didn't do anything special--just booted the "kicker" floppies. My SCSI card was an Adaptec 1542, which the installation set includes with in its driver set. If you want, I can set up a system here again and give it a go. Which version of OS/2 are you installing?

Can you share some more detail on the mvax3100 cd rom setup, perhaps a new thread in the DEC section of this board, if you don't already have this documented somewhere? I'd like to start working on adding a cd rom to my 3100. I have a lot of SCSI drives but I am unsure if I have anything compatible.

SGI workstations likewise. This was pretty common, and several Plextor CD-ROMs along with several Toshiba CD-ROMS (and even a few DVD-ROMS with certain firmware versions) can be jumpered to 512 byte block size.

You could post a query yourself in the DEC section about MicroVAX / VAXstation compatible SCSI CD-ROM drives. I have a MicroVAX 3100 M20 and a VAXstation M76. I forget what drives work with them. I'd have to check.

Every SCSI Plextor drive I've owned has the sector select dip switch/jumper. Those Toshiba drives are pure evil though, you certainly want a caddy loading one since the tray ones have horrible eject mechanisms that are prone to breaking.
