Can you dump the firmware and take pictures of the board(s)? it is early enough that it may not even have a microprocessor

Hi Al - yep, it's early so doesn't have a CPU - its all TTL logic. Most advanced feature is the MM5240 character generator

fun! dynamic shift register memories. does it have a keytronic keyboard? it's old enough that they were probably still using reed switches in the keyswitch assemblies

Yes I think it is a Keytronic magnetic reed type key switch - see photos. They are really tall.

They appear to be. If you look on the bottom you should see two leads for the reeds and sometimes they cut a hole in the PCB in the middle and you can see the glass bulb.
