I have a working Tandberg SCSI SLR5 QIC drive and a non-working one. The non-working one simply doesn't read tapes, period. It obeys all of the SCSI command set documented for it, but always returns "Request Sense" info of "blank media". Needless to mention, the customer diagnostic set 2 fails utterly.

Anyone have experience with these drives? Whats the point of failure? I've also got a 4120 SLR3 drive that behaves identically.

Figured it out. Apparently, sometimes old tapes shed really stubborn junk not removed by a cleaning tape. Open up the drive, get out a rag, some acetone or perc and really clean the drive head. Everything seems to work now. Hope this helps others.
