I have a Dell Inspiron 3800 that is currently running Windows ME. I don't exactly want to just get rid of ME because I don't have any other systems running it but at the same time would like a fully functioning Windows 2000 laptop.

My plan is to use Partition Magic to create a new partition on the drive, and then install Windows 2000 to the new partition. Is this a viable plan or will I have had to install 2000 first?

I would just use 2 HDs and swap as needed. 2K is best with NTFS and ME is best with FAT32 .

You need 2 partitions and W98ME needs to be on the first. Now just install W2K on the second partition and it should dual boot.

The rule of thumb is to always install the MSDOS/Windows 9X in a primary partition first, then install NT/2K/XP... in its partition second. It will create a bootloader menu that allows for selection. There is also a version of Grub for MSDOS...
