I've recently took a Philips AT 286 that was going to be recycled, and I have no monitor that I can connect to it.

But, when I turn it on a series of beeps of varying length can be heard, so, what should be the problem?

It's an Philips NMS 9100/AT 286 right?
Ram and Video card are the most common errors, check those. And try find a manual or some documentation about it. Don't confuse it with the XT computer with the same name.

Yup, it depends per BIOS manufacturer but you'll want to note the beeps as indicated above. It's a combination of long and short (like 4 short beeps a lot of time is RAM). The beeps as you probably know indicate a problem that's occurring prior to video being available (this can of course include the video card being loose or missing). You'll just need to look up the BIOS manufacturer to find out the correct beep code diagnostic. Hopefully something simple :)
