Forum Rules and Etiquette

Our mission ...

This forum is part of our mission to promote the preservation of vintage computers through education and outreach. (In real life we also run events and have a museum.) We encourage you to join us, participate, share your knowledge, and enjoy.

This forum has been around in this format for over 15 years. These rules and guidelines help us maintain a healthy and active community, and we moderate the forum to keep things on track. Please familiarize yourself with these rules and guidelines.

Rule 1: Remain civil and respectful

There are several hundred people who actively participate here. People come from all different backgrounds and will have different ways of seeing things. You will not agree with everything you read here. Back-and-forth discussions are fine but do not cross the line into rude or disrespectful behavior.

Conduct yourself as you would at any other place where people come together in person to discuss their hobby. If you wouldn't say something to somebody in person, then you probably should not be writing it here.

This should be obvious but, just in case: profanity, threats, slurs against any group (sexual, racial, gender, etc.) will not be tolerated.

Rule 2: Stay close to the original topic being discussed
  • If you are starting a new thread choose a reasonable sub-forum to start your thread. (If you choose incorrectly don't worry, we can fix that.)
  • If you are responding to a thread, stay on topic - the original poster was trying to achieve something. You can always start a new thread instead of potentially "hijacking" an existing thread.

Rule 3: Contribute something meaningful

To put things in engineering terms, we value a high signal to noise ratio. Coming here should not be a waste of time.
  • This is not a chat room. If you are taking less than 30 seconds to make a post then you are probably doing something wrong. A post should be on topic, clear, and contribute something meaningful to the discussion. If people read your posts and feel that their time as been wasted, they will stop reading your posts. Worse yet, they will stop visiting and we'll lose their experience and contributions.
  • Do not bump threads.
  • Do not "necro-post" unless you are following up to a specific person on a specific thread. And even then, that person may have moved on. Just start a new thread for your related topic.
  • Use the Private Message system for posts that are targeted at a specific person.

Rule 4: "PM Sent!" messages (or, how to use the Private Message system)

This forum has a private message feature that we want people to use for messages that are not of general interest to other members.

In short, if you are going to reply to a thread and that reply is targeted to a specific individual and not of interest to anybody else (either now or in the future) then send a private message instead.

Here are some obvious examples of when you should not reply to a thread and use the PM system instead:
  • "PM Sent!": Do not tell the rest of us that you sent a PM ... the forum software will tell the other person that they have a PM waiting.
  • "How much is shipping to ....": This is a very specific and directed question that is not of interest to anybody else.

Why do we have this policy? Sending a "PM Sent!" type message basically wastes everybody else's time by making them having to scroll past a post in a thread that looks to be updated, when the update is not meaningful. And the person you are sending the PM to will be notified by the forum software that they have a message waiting for them. Look up at the top near the right edge where it says 'Notifications' ... if you have a PM waiting, it will tell you there.

Rule 5: Copyright and other legal issues

We are here to discuss vintage computing, so discussing software, books, and other intellectual property that is on-topic is fine. We don't want people using these forums to discuss or enable copyright violations or other things that are against the law; whether you agree with the law or not is irrelevant. Do not use our resources for something that is legally or morally questionable.

Our discussions here generally fall under "fair use." Telling people how to pirate a software title is an example of something that is not allowable here.

Reporting problematic posts

If you see spam, a wildly off-topic post, or something abusive or illegal please report the thread by clicking on the "Report Post" icon. (It looks like an exclamation point in a triangle and it is available under every post.) This send a notification to all of the moderators, so somebody will see it and deal with it.

If you are unsure you may consider sending a private message to a moderator instead.

New user moderation

New users are directly moderated so that we can weed spammers out early. This means that for your first 10 posts you will have some delay before they are seen. We understand this can be disruptive to the flow of conversation and we try to keep up with our new user moderation duties to avoid undue inconvenience. Please do not make duplicate posts, extra posts to bump your post count, or ask the moderators to expedite this process; 10 moderated posts will go by quickly.

New users also have a smaller personal message inbox limit and are rate limited when sending PMs to other users.

Other suggestions
  • Use Google, books, or other definitive sources. There is a lot of information out there.
  • Don't make people guess at what you are trying to say; we are not mind readers. Be clear and concise.
  • Spelling and grammar are not rated, but they do make a post easier to read.

Sound Blaster IDE Cards Drivers Collection

    Greetings!

Some of you may know me from Vogons.

I'm currently collecting all the Sound Blaster ISA cards' drivers. TheMAN is also collecting the drivers and is about to release his 4th revision of his Drivers CD. WolverineDK is making mirrors for all the CDs available.

The reason I'm posting this is that I'm looking for more drivers and disk images. If anyone has them, you can contribute to this collection, and I'll keep the links updated.

All these drivers are available for whomever that requires them. Have a look at the drivers set at my link below, and if anyone here has more disks that are not listed there, kindly upload yours too or can post the links where those can be found!

    Thanks a Bunch!

EDIT : ALL THE LINKS: (Originally posted at Vogons - vogons.zetafleet.com)

UPDATE - THE NEWER UPDATES WITH CERTAIN DRIVER CD ISO IMAGES' LINKS ARE BELOW WITHIN THIS POST.

I've uploaded everything into Megaupload. This is the single rar version of the complete files I listed above, in its entirety.
I had to use rar for a slightly better compression than the more common zip, though I forgot to use 7zip. Sorry for the incovenience, but for those who are not having a rar decompressor, you can download the free 7zip to decompress it.

    Malik,

How do you have the drivers and disks oranized? Do you have disk images? Or do you have zipped files? It would be awesome if you have something like:

    Sound Blaster 1.5 CT1320:
    -OG Driver Disks
    -VOX Tools
    -Talking Parrot
    -etc
    -Updated Drivers
    -Revision 2 Update

That way someone looking for drivers could esily find them. In any case kudos to you for doing this for the community!
Current Wish List: 1. IBM 7531 Industrial Series PC 2. NEC MultiSync XL (JC-2001) Monitor 3. MicroSolutions UniDOS card 4. Compaq 14" VGA CRT Monitor (the one that came with the SystemPro). 5. Stacker HW CoProcessor Board MCA BUS. If you have any of the above for sale please PM me. Thank you!

        Shadow Lord,

I have both individual files and zipped bundle. The individual files are at Mediafire. The zipped version is available at megaupload. Fellow Vogons member WolverineDK has made mirrors for the files. All the links can be found at my post there.

My individual files are not explicitly named as you have mentioned. But you can still find file names like SB, SbPro, sbpro2, sb 1.5 etc.

Currently, I'm working on renaming and reorganizing the files. I'll post the file name structure when ready.

My versions are currently expanded version. For example, under Sound Blaster 1.5 CT-1350B, you'll find sub-folders like VOXKIT, SB-PARROT, etc., and in some others, you'll find sub folders with the labels like Disk 1, Disk 2,etc. The Awe32 disks come with subfolders named Installation, Accessories, etc. All files iare expanded and ready to be copied to a floppy disk.

TheMAN's files are in original 8.3 file naming format and all his files are in floppy images format.

        Thanks!

        @PeterNY : Thanks!

-Install CDs for the original Soundblaster Live! (Dated 8/7/199
Disc 1 has drivers for Windows 95/NT 4.0 including DOS TSRs and Cakewalk Express Gold. Disc 2 has Mixman Studio, Sound Forge XP 4, and Unreal SE. Disc 3 has the SB Live! Tour (surround sound demos and such), SoundFont Samples and Demo tracks.

TheMAN's list contains individual files, hence the long list. My list is zipped. I'm collecting more of the 8-bit cards, and TheMAN's collection concentrates mainly on 16-bit cards' drivers as well.

            njroadfan,

Umm.... I have this on 3.5" and 5.25". Came with my Soundblaster 1.5 CT-1320C (the same one that had the CMS programming booklet)

            I also have the following.

-Install CD for Soundblaster 16 "WavEffects" (1999 or so)
-Install CDs for the original Soundblaster Live!
I have few CD images in my links. Including Live! CD 1 and 2. But I don't think I have the WavEffects CD. You can upload it and any others too! Greatly appreciated!

And I'm also looking very hard for the Sound Blaster 16 MCD disks/CD. Anyone has it?

            Thanks for all your help!

Have a look at my link for all the currently available drivers. (via Vogons.)

            The Link again -

I have just recently acquired a Sound Blaster MCV 5320 - it has two floppy disks in the box, IIRC. I haven't had a chance to check them yet (just arrived 2 days ago), but I plan to image them ASAP... Will be glad to image them as-is, trusting to your methods for virus scanning, etc. Depending upon time and availability of the manuals, I might scan the pertinent setup/pinout pages as well, as these seem to be different from my Sound Blaster 1.5/2.0 (especially the installation method - on a quick skim, I was surprised by the hoops one has to jump through to install this)
              ---
              Currently seeking:
              * Roland MPU-401/AT (with daughter card header)
              * Magitronic K-156 Keyboard (5pin DIN w/ XT-AT switch)
I also collect PC and C64 Sierra On-Line software!

What is the CD part number for your Live CD 1 and 2 (printed on the disc itself)?
                      Mine is: 1713331000 (disc 1), and 1713331003 (disc 2)

Please do share the SB16 WavEffects disc for sure... I want to take a look at what unique things it got and if deemed "worthy", I will include them into my ISO (the new version is due out any day now)

The Waveffects card wasn't anything special, just a Vibra 16 card bundled with the WaveGuide software synth the AWE64 came with. The software included was basic, I think it came with some telephony program since the card was full duplex. I'll get the Live! CD P/Ns later today. Keep in mind this is from the first ever Live! card that came out in 1998, the one that came with the coxial breakout backplate with the digital DIN output and gold plated interconencts. All I know is, I spent way too much on soundcards through the year!

Also, where should I send these files to add to the collection? I have the bandwidth to do an FTP dump.

I can make disk images from the following Sound Blasters disks:
                          • Sound Blaster 1.5 (CT-1320C), 5.25" and 3.5" diskettes
                          • C/MS Kit for Sound Blaster 1.5, 5.25" diskette
                          • Sound Blaster Pro 2 (CT1600), 5.25" diskettes
                          • Sound Blaster 16 SCSI-2 (CT1770), 3.5" diskettes. The box includes some CD-ROM as well.
                          • Sound Blaster AWE 64 Value (CT4520), CD-ROM
                          • Sound Blaster AWE 64 Gold (CT4390), CD-ROM

I can also make images from the following Gravis Ultrasound drivers if needed. I'm looking for GUS PnP CD-ROM image so let me know if someone has it.
                          • Gravis Ultasound Classic 3.5" diskettes with v2.06 drivers
                          • Gravis Ultrasound Classic/Max/Ace 3.5" diskettes with v4.10 drivers
                          • Gravis Ultrasound Max/Ace CD-ROM with v3.59 drivers
                          • Gravis Ultrasound Max/Ace CD-ROM with v4.11 drivers

                            Great, guys!

I'm only collecting Creative's cards' drivers for the moment. I don't have much experience in using Gravis Ultrasound cards, but I believe they'll come useful one day. If you want, I'll create a separate post for classic Gravis Ultrasound drivers. But I have to depend solely on driver file contributions from others, since I don't have those collections on my own.

I'm particularly interested in collecting the floppy disk versions of the drivers (and also CDs for AWE32 and SB16 series), and post them in a single place for all to see and download. I'm collecting both the 8-bit and 16-bit cards' drivers. TheMAN is collecting all the 16-bit cards' drivers.

All efforts are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

(Regarding where to upload, if you have dumping services like the ftp mentioned above, you can give me the link. I'll download and re-upload to my megaupload account and paste the links back here.)

To the mods/admins : I would like to post all my links here, so that members over here can easily find them, rather than going through Vogons. Will that be ok, and easier? Currently I have posted all the links at one place at Vogons, since it's easier to update the links with new additions from one site. If the members here prefer me to duplicate the links directly here, I will gladly do so. Thanks!
