A voltmeter is a device for measuring the potential difference (voltage) between points in an electric circuit. Although available as separate instruments, voltage measurement is also one of the common major functions of a [wiki]multimeter[/wiki]. Voltage can also be measured by an [wiki]oscilloscope[/wiki].

Most voltmeters available today fall into two main categories: analogue and digital. An analogue meter works by connecting the points to be measured to either end of a coil. This coil is used, incombination with a permanent magnet, to actuate a needle against a scale from which the number of volts can be read off. Due to their fast reaction times, analogue meters are useful for measuring signals which change relatively quickly over time.
Digital volt meters use electronics to measure the potential difference and display this on an electronic numerical display, such as an LCD.
