It hasn't stopped raining here for four days and nights, and tomorrow, more of same. The river's expected to crest at 9.5 feet sometime tomorrow, and flood point is 9'...anybody got any good schematics for an ark?

Anyways, just checking...are all our friends in Texas safe & dry?

Well, having two friends that are staying at my house (long story and different reasons) both have families along the coast near where it was hitting. Needless to say they've been freaking out about their families for a few days now and of course made sure that we overreacted in the house as well so I have supplies and they wanted the bathtubs filled, etc. We had a little showering of rain two days after it hit but nothing from the hurricane directly (kinda disappointing honestly, wish it watered the yard or something).

Glad to know you're ok though, forgot u were over there.

It's a pity Ike isn't busy constantly spinning around our water catchments - Australia must have the worst Water management scheme in the world! :-( - where it almost seems that Waterfall must be over the Dams! Anyway I'm turning this into a bit of a Rant! :-(

We have people in Katy, but we haven't heard from them yet. We contacted them before the storm, and they were planning to evacuate, so it may be a while before they are able to communicate again.

Not to turn this into a rant but, I can't help remembering all the bitching that some people in Texas, especially Houston, were doing about all the Katrina evacuees being there. My heart goes out to them, but I wonder if this mess is karmic blowback, of just plain ol' cozmik irony?

Just to rub it in: I just came back from a six day vacation in Portugal. All sunshine and hot weather, about 25-30 C (75-85 F) in the days. A bit windy and chilly in the evening, only 16-18 C... ;-) But not a single drip of rain. Our hosts told us the weather was unusually nice for the season.

Oh well, I shouldn't mention the weather in Sweden: some 10-12 C in the daytime, I suppose a bit rainy and cloudy.

From what I know some people in Houston aren't expected to have power for a few weeks, but that's news that I haven't directly queried anyone on, just overheard from a friend of a friend.

I hear that Ontario Hydro, as has become it's tradition, is sending a convoy of equipment and workers down to Texas to help with the repairs to the electrical infrastructure.

Yah, several weeks, mebbe up to a couple of months.
Thankfully, it stopped raining here yesterday morning, and the river stopped rising before flooding. Other areas nearby weren't so lucky. South of here, in Flint, the drain system failed, and hundreds of homes have basements full of backed-up sewerage. The Shiawassee River, to the west, did overflow somewhat (what FEMA officially refers to as a "minor" disaster). Not as bad as the last flood in 2004, but still bad news for the folks affected.

I heard from the media about the power being cut for weeks or a couple of months. Be interesting to see how people will cope - will they move? or stay? I guess a lot of folks with things like Caravans/Campervans/Tents will simply vacate the area to where they can get power. One annoying thing which happened to us earlier in the year when we were without power for several hours was our neighbours had things like Generators going - which was annoying cause they were noisy! :-( We simply waited until the power went back on and listened to the government based ABC radio in the meantime which was good! Though when you've got an Internet addiction - it's so annoying when you don't have power! :-( What gets me though is without power you'd have to clean out the fridge - otherwise the food would be wasted for sure!
