I've been playing with my new Sound Blaster 2.0 card on my 386 and the FM synth and MIDI mappers it has. Even just messing with the PLAY.EXE program the SB2.0 came with is awesome, just playing different audio files to see what happens.

... and it really got me thinking... is there a good program anyone would care to recommend for editing and creating MIDI music in DOS? Preferably with a GUI or mouse support of some kind - would be nice anyway. Or even a decent one for Windows that I can use to create and then transfer over to the DOS machine with the real hardware.

I have FL Studio but it doesn't give me all the instruments that the SB2.0 uses - at least not easily, it's a ton of trial and error to find out how certain instruments will sound on the SB card.

Thanks for any tips!

I think Cakewalk was the big program for that, and it had DOS versions before going to Windows. Not sure if it can be downloaded for free but you can likely find old boxed versions on sale ...

Not quite the same and probably more cpu intense than you're looking for but there were a lot of free trackers out there that use midi to play a recorded sample at different pitches. Things like ScreamTracker or ImpulseTracker are two I see references to and remember toying with. I also remember trying Cakewalk in DOS but at the time it was more work that I was willing to go through to get it working and some software that came with a sound card my folks purchased to get me the ability to do midi and tracking had some simple ware that worked for what I needed at the time.

Still, playing with trackers was certainly fun. Plus you could dissect any other song and play with the voices used to create it (play around with prodigy samples or some vocals).

Voyetra sequenser plus gold is free to download from voyetra, i just hooked my ***PC-XT/SB 1350b*** up with it.

If you by chance come by any link to Cakewalk for DOS **any version** please mail me jonas.thornvall@hotmail.com.
Do you know if FL studio works on an PC-XT (8086,8088?) or any other midi sequenser that does?

So far the only midisequensers i found for DOS and PC-XT, is cakewalk and voyetra sequenser plus but there must be more?
