Referencing in VCWiki

I have been slowly enhancing the IBM 5170 entry at our VCWiki (http://wiki.vintage-computer.com/index.php/IBM_PC_AT_(5170))

I can't get referencing to work as it does at Wikipedia.
It's done per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Refs

Is referencing at VCWiki done diferently?

It should be just about exactly the same as Wikipedia - the basic software is the same.

Did you check the help? I thought I saw it mentioned in there.

If it's still being wonky I may need to update the MediaWiki software.

More attempts fail.

When one clicks on 'Editing help', a page opens that reads "There is currently no text in this page."

From reading the following 2 web pages, I get the impression that referencing functionality is an extension to MediaWiki and needs to be added:
1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Refs (description of the Reflist template)
2. http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Cite/Cite.php (installation source/details of .php that implements the Reflist template)

Not important - just a nice-to-have.
