Hi all,

I was doing a bit of computer maintenance yesterday and started thinking about my computer "collection." I didn't realize that I had this many computers

Let's define "working" as only having to plug in a monitor, keyboard and power. I'll try to categorize 'em on the fly...

PC compatible, non-name brand

AMD Athlon 1200 This is the computer I'm posting with

AMD Athlon 1700 MB doesn't support 1700, runs perfectly at 1100

AMD Athlon 750 Still attempting to make a "TiVo" of this one

AMD K6/2 500

AMD K6/2 450

AMD K6/2 300 In use as a file server and storage

AMD 5x86 133

PC compatible, name brand

Systemax Venture PentiumIII-667

Hewlett-Packard Brio Celeron 466

eMachines eTower 300 Celeron 300

IBM Aptiva 2136-E40 AMD 6x86 166

IBM PS/1 Consultant 2155-G76 Now with Intel 486DX/2 66, originally 486DX 33. Bought this one brand new, Jan 1993, about $1600.

PC compatible, name brand laptop

Compaq Presario 1610 Pentium 150. Bought this one brand new, also about $1600.

Compaq Contura 4/25c Intel 486SL 25

PC compatible, industrial

Advantech Industrial Computer 610 PentiumIII 800. Processor, RAM, drive controllers, serial, parallel all on a single full-length card. Chassis has several interface cards such as motion control, I/O for sensors, frame grabbers, etc.

Computerway CTS-6000 Intel P55C 200. Fully self-contained in a sealed stainless steel cabinet. Amber flat panel display with touch-screen.

Non-PC compatible

Dimension 68000 Motorola MC68000G8. Several of these, but only one reliable keyboard.

TRS-80 Pocket Computer PC-2. With printer, cassette interface.

Lets see I have:

JDR Server (JDR made the case, I made the server)
My Main Network Server. Also the Green Net server.

PowerMac G3 AIO
over 50 pounds!

Mac Performa 630 CD

Toshiba Satillite A55 (Not Vintage)

Toshiba T44 SCX
A 486 of some sort

IBM Thinkpad 380ED
166 Pentium I think

Everex Tempo
386

Compudyne (Model?)
486

Compuadd (Model?)

Samsung S330
8088? 8086? one of those

Compaq Portable 386
Larger than I thought it was.

I have a bunch of others but they need work.

I can only guesstimate at around 100-or-so. I only have about a half-dozen non-functional machines, not counting "parts" machines that have been cannibalized.. A quick count, there are 15 of 'em within arms-reach of where I'm sitting right now (seven are palmtop/handhelds).

I'm about the same. Possibly a few more. I only have about 4 newer than a 486. The "vintage" definition should really be extended to 15 years from the present 10.

I dunno, I kinda like to think of some of my early (1995,6-era) Pen-Based computers as "vintage", or at least "classic" even though they ain't really "antique".

I play the alto saxophone, and when you speak about a vintage saxophone, it should be at least 30, if not 40 years old. And remember that technically a new sax works just as well as an old one, although the older horn may be better built and have more charisma to the tone. Dunno what age "vintage" means in other hobbies like cars, clothing, wines and so on.

I believe "vintage" in many cases is restricted to certain years, so even in fifteen years from now, a 1978 saxophone may not be considered vintage. If computer collectors also should cap the end of vintage computers, the question is at what year - 1987, 1990, 1993, 1996 and so on.

Okay, "vintage," and I guess not missing any vital parts.

Three.

Toshiba T1200
" Satellite 100CS, 75mhz
" Satellite Pro 460CDT, 166mhz

I have more but they're missing parts (Main machine, HAL with a 1.2ghz and a dying hdd so I took it out of service while I can still transfer the data, Atari 520ST(M), NEC Versa V 50mhz, Fujitsu Stylistic 500, 50mhz 486)

I've had to thin out my collection quite a bit cause of the small apartment. All of the Mac's, C=XX's, desktops and handhelds are gone. I'm not really a collector anyway.

my fully working collection consists of..
Macintosh...
-Macintosh 68030 color classic ( I am going to put a lc 575 board in it to upgrade.)
-Macintosh G3 338.3 (I overclocked it from 266 MHz.)
-Macintosh ibook clamshell lime green (needs aa power coard)
PC's........
-Canadian logic 133MHz 486
-AST 486 50 MHz
-Dell xpst450 Pentium 3.
-Dell latitude intel celeron 600Mhz (i am positing with it.)

vintage...
-tandy 1000
- tandy 1000 SL

I have about six other computers, but they don't work.

classiccmp excluded some less than 10 year olds such as the Next from their 10 year rule. I would definitely consider my 1993 pen-based Dauphin DTR-1 vintage. There needn't be a rigid rule and there are certainly computers like the BEOS that must be considered Vintage but there has been a tendency lately to ignore even the 10 year rule. I admit to doing it myself.

"Vintage" is what differentiates this forum from such as "HowtoFixMycomputer" and we shouldn't lose sight of that.

A dumb non-vintage question, but does those two have the same CPU slot and would the 1200 machine support the 1700 processor and vice versa?

An excellent question, and here's the answer (sort of).

The motherboard that the 1200 is currently in (Epox 8KTA3) will run the 1700 at 1400. The 1700 is not multiplier unlocked so it cannot be overclocked (which wouldn't really be overclocking). The 1200 is not locked and will run quite happily on the Epox at 1331.

The other board is an ECS K7S5A and has a problem in that it won't run above 110MHz even though it should run 133MHz. The factory BIOS has only 2 speed choices, 100/133. Selecting 100MHz works fine, 133 is no go. The overclock BIOS now installed allows 100 to 166 in small increments. 110 works fine, 112 and up results in no POST. Therefore, it runs the 1700 at 1200 and the 1200 at 900 or thereabouts. I don't think that ram is the problem, I've tried PC133 and DDR2100, same results. I'm thinking that it's the core voltage, but there is apparently no way to change it. The BIOS and various utilities show 1.35v and that is probably too low for higher speeds.

So, if I want a faster computer I'll have to buy one. :(

EDIT!

Aargh! I've become entangled in semantics and marketing. :?

Athlon 1200 = clock speed 1200MHz

Athlon XP 1700+ = clock speed 1467MHz

So the 1700+ was performing up to spec in the Epox board. Now I've got to swap processors again. The 1700+ supports SSE where the 1200 does not.

I have 177 in collection at this moment. Only one is a total boat anchor (part's box). Twelve need to have the OS installed, but are otherwise bootable. The rest are ready to go.

the offscouring of the earth :)

the offscouring of the earth :)

Tandy 2000's x 6, oops 2 may be broken

NCR PC4 (mono) x 3 (getting a color one too :)

Commie 64c (my original)

Commie Sx-64 - oops, this one got issues!

Eagle PC-2

Leading Edge Model M

Compaq portable II

Texas Instruments Professional x 2 , 1 might be busted

TI Portable Professional (color ;)

Epson QX-10 w/Titan 8088 board

NEC APC x 2, both color

NEC APC III loaded

SGI Indigo 2 x 6, 3 teal, 3 purple

2 SGI Indy's, 1 might be busted

DEC Rainbow 100

Sanyo MBC-1000

Apple Lisa/2 *might be busted or have serious issues*

Apple Mac SE - found it on the side of the road :)

Xerox 16/8

Sharp PC-1500 portable

IBM PC/AT 5170

AMT ATJR, really an AMTjr, IBM made them change the name, a clone

IBM 5150 w/"Bullet 286" mobo, have real IBM PC & XT mobos though

IBM Peanut PCjr, DEFINATELY not working *sorry*

Tandy 1000 x 3

OMG FINALLY RECEIVED A MINDSET sans keyboard in the post today!!! Can't tell you if it works or not

o man what else...

AT & T 7300 Unix PC

AT & T 6300 x 2, one might be busted lol *sorry again*

Xerox clone of above, both were made by Olivetti

thinking...

Yamaha MSX puter, forget the model #, I think it works, has a funky monitor connection

Televideo Personal Mini PM/16T, works? regardless a project

2 weird Sony SMC-?, more weirdo's with strange monitor connectors

then there's the newer stuff, my Toshiba laptop (1.4gig Celeron I think), and the only other "newer" puter that works is a Cyrix M-II, 233 mhz. I bought a P4 mobo from weirdstuff, and have most everything needed to make a unit out of it, except the cpu :(. Anyone got a used working Pentium 4 (socket 478) on the cheapish side? I only payed 17 bucks for the mobo, don't want to drop $150 on a chip.

If I can think of anything else to add to the list, I will ;).

Wasn't there someone on this list asking about Mindsets recently?

To be honest I didn't even read even the intro to this thread LOL. And someone else can count them if they're interested. I'm too tired.

Almost all of my computers work, except the 486 at the moment because I don't have any Cache chips that I can use in the L2 Cache, and the CMOS circuit is corrorded to where it won't hold the settings unless I leave it plugged in. I'm going to replace the motherboard on it eventually.

Vintage or Old? Useable or Obsolete?

Vintage or Old? Useable or Obsolete?

I have to jump in. My sons figure that my old 'obsolete' machines are junk. I picked up two Epson Equity ll+ machines off from a curb abd guess what ? They work. MS DOS 6.22 and WIndows 3.1. Vintage? Perhaps not; collectible? Heck yeah!

I have a number of 'old' machines ranging from the Sharp PC-1500A w/ printer interface and its cousin the TRS-80 Pocket Computer. I have really old 'computers' referred to as Slide rules! (All functional.)

Give me an old machine and I can get it to work. I love tinkering with these machines. My sliderules are antiques, my PC-1500A is vintage and my others are old but useful and functional.

My new Dell Dimension is obsolete; it was obsolete five minutes after I removed it from its carton!
