anyone know if a 3DO controller works on an Amiga

No, don't even try it, it might damage something but at the very least it won't work. It's a serial controller and it's not compatible with standard 9 pin joystick ports.

yhea, i wasnt sure if it would work. i've read about genny controllers messing up 3d0's but i wanted to make sure. looks like my choices for a half decent amiga controller are an offical amiga cd32 or a genesis controller

I'd be wary about using a Sega Genesis controller on an Amiga as well. The pinout is similar enough for the four directions and one button to work, but if you push any other button you might short circuit a low voltage. Doing it once probably doesn't cause any harm, but the long term effects and possible risks of frying some I/O chip (8520 in the Amiga?) would make me think twice. Just about any Atari compatible joystick will work, but perhaps you are more of a gamepad person which is why you are looking for a pad to play with.

Amigas should be able to handle minor wrong voltages/signals on the joystick ports but the C64 is a bit more delicate and might start to fail sooner. I've been using unmodified Genesis controllers on Commodore systems for years with no known issues but there is still a risk of damage, so if you have an alternative, use it. You'll only be able to use 2 buttons on a standard Genesis controller when used with Amiga and compatible games, so safety isn't the only reason to use a CD32 type controller.
