as you can see from my username, vintage computers elude me....BUT.....my boyfriend has wanted a Tandy 1000 for a couple years now SO I took the plunge and bought him one.

Now.....it didn't come with any software(I did know before I purchased), but I also purchased(from a different seller) the MS DOS operating software that I THOUGHT was correct, but when I received it in the mail today, I realized they are 3.5 disks instead of the 5.25 floppy.....

Does anyone know where I can find the correct software? I'm assuming...obviously(and I swear I'm not blond), the 3.5 disks won't work.....

Any help would be appreciated!!

If you (or someone you know) has a computer with both size floppy drives you can probably port them over to 5.25" disks. Let's start there.

That is a negative....I only have a 3.5 external drive....no one I know has a 5.25

You should be able to find an internal 3.5" drive cheap enough to transfer the disks, assuming they are double density, not high density. What DOS and 1000 did you get?

Your boyfriend is a lucky guy to get a thoughtful gift like that.

What I'd do in this situation is move the 5.25" drive over to a modern PC, dump the disk, and move it back. That will require opening two PCs, use of a screwdriver, and knowledge of what to plug in where. You can find disk images here.

If that's out of your reach, I bet someone here will dump a copy for a few bucks. I'd do it for you, but I only have a couple blank 5.25" disks myself.

Do you know which model of Tandy 1000 you have? As some folks said if you're worried you can buy an external 5.25" for the Tandy too which might be useful at some point. Otherwise most versions of MS-DOS or Tandy labeled dos would work fine as well, you'll just want to read the fine print or ask the seller to confirm the format. Other than that if we know your rough location (city, state) someone here might be close enough to get you one too.

Very nice of you to help him relive those memories. I'm sure it'll be a blast. If it's not a holiday gift perhaps the software challenge is something you can both do together. He can sign up here too if he wants to ask questions or just have fun reminiscing with the crowd.

Well for the Tandy...I know it's an 1000SX with the upgraded RAM 640k
As for the MS DOS disks, again they are the 3.25 size; 6.21 and they are high density.

Where are you located?

later,
dabone

I'm located in PA close to Pittsburgh

I could PROBABLY figure out how to do that...BUT my BF is quite partial to his PC that he built and I'm pretty sure I'd end up messin' something up, so I'd rather not have to do this...HOWEVER he would be able to do this by himself if that is an option. It is a Christmas present and I just would like him to be able to play with it that day instead of having to do some more shopping and waiting, ya know?

Yeah here's a question though....if I can't get my hands on a 5.25" DOS disk(s)....is there a particular external 3.5" drive that would plug into the Tandy? I was lookin' at a couple online today....but I get nervous on vague descriptions on ebay 0.o

Aw, c'mon, it's Christmas! Send her (assuming it's a she ;-) ) a couple of 5.25" DOS disks already!

No problem. If tandyclueless sends me a PM I'll send her whatever version of DOS on 5¼" disks she wants.

Since I'm no Tandy expert what version is appropriate, 3.3?

The 1000SX originally shipped with MS-DOS 3.2 and DeskMate II. You can find disk images here:

It is recommended to use this Tandy-specific version of DOS, so you get the GW-BASIC interpreter (BASIC.EXE) which can take advantage of the 1000's improved sound and graphics.

You also get the MODE command to set the 7mhz processor back to 4.77mhz for games that require original XT speed.
