Hello,

I'm trying to do a mystic upgrade for a color classic, but I have a few questions before I start. Is there any type of modification I need to do other than inserting in the motherboard? I am planning to run system 7.1 on it. I have looked online and many are saying that you need a system enabler to install 7.1 with the mystic upgrade. I'm kind of new to macs and I don't really know what an enabler is? I mean I know it is the "install me first" disk before you install system 7.1 but other than that I really don't know what it does and what I need to do with it to install system 7.1 on the computer. Sorry if this is really elementary stuff, but I gotta ask someone! Thanks

If you're happy with the base video resolution then yes, simply inserting the Mystic board is all you have to do. (It's all I did with mine, except I later added a full '040.)

Mine also runs System 7.1, but you do need a system enabler. The easiest way is to get 7.1 on it first before you do the board swap, then grab the enabler (which should be System Enabler 065) and install that. It won't interfere with the original board. When it's working well and the enabler is installed, then do the board swap and it should "just work." The enablers can be downloaded lots of places and I have it as well if you can't find it. Here's an Apple tech document on which enablers are needed for which OS versions and machines:

There's an option 640x480 60Hz VGA hack you can do (doubly useful if you want to replace the CRT with an LCD.

Unfortunately, I can't find a website with instructions anymore.

thanks for the info guys! The reason why I am doing the mystic upgrade is because the original motherboard in the color classic no longer works. So I won't be able to install the enabler on the old board first. Is there any way around this?

Thanks

I had to move some resistors on my LC575 board to get the OS loaded (7.5.5). Resistor R116 has to be removed and placed on the pad marked R109. The components are located on the bottom of the board near the edge connector. I think this only has to be done for 7.5.5 and up and if you don't do the 640x480 mod.

Well, you could remove the drive and copy the system folder and the enabler to it from another Mac. That's about all I can think of short of trying to fiddle with the board to make it appear to have a different Gestalt ID (which is essentially MerrickD's suggestion).

Alternatively, boot it with a Disk Tools floppy (8.1 should work), and then copy over the enabler from a LocalTalk network or a second floppy drive or, if you're really a masochist, by floppy swapping. This assumes, of course, that System 7.1 is already on the hard disk.
