Does anyone know if the 5161 uses a special pinout or if it's simply a straight-through cable (i.e. pin 1 to pin 1)? I've been searching but haven't found any answers. I've found one pdf link from this site that is now long gone too. :/

It's straight-through, so most generic cables will work. The original IBM cable does use quite a gauge compared to the number of contacts, but there are thinner alternatives you can get hold of.

Information and pinout can be found in the IBM PC Options and Adapters techrefs, which has been scanned quite some time ago. check it out here: http://www.minuszerodegrees.net/oa/oa.htm

Fantastic! I even looked at that site and completely missed the 5161 PDF on it. Thanks!

I think I found a company that has plenty of these cables in stock. I just ordered one for about $34 shipped. If it works I'll post the link since it seems that these are hard to find.

Yes, please do tell when the cable arrives. I need to add that link to my own web site for those out there seeking a replacement.

TIA

The cable worked! Right now it's just a basic setup of a video card, floppy card, and extender card in the 5150 and the receiver card and hdd controller card in the 5161 but it worked.

Make sure you get the MALE/MALE cable on the bottom. The top one is MALE/FEMALE.

I picked the shortest one out of caustion. 2.5'. It's still long enough to sit the units side by side.
