Level 1 and Level II ROMs in one machine

I remember a long time ago about having both the Level 1 ROM and the level II ROM in the same machine and being switch selectable.
Does anyone know about the article and where I can find it on to do this? I think it was 80 Micro magazine that had it. Why do this? why not.

Alternatively, of course, it was possible to load a modified version of Level I from disk or tape on a Level II machine. I'm sure the binaries for that must be floating around somewhere. (Granted, this suggestion is somewhat missing the point.)
