Does anyone know what the controls are for Defender of the Crown? I have been trying to unsuccessfully play the Mac version of this game on a Plus and IIci.

Does anyone know how to win the jousting tournaments? That has always evaded me. Thanks! :)

For the PC version (might be same as others?), aim for the part of the shield where the diagonal lines/crosses meet up. That's the center of the shield and the best chance of knocking him off.

Sounds about right for the Amiga version too (I guess for all of them). If you pick a character with better jousting ability there is less wobble on their lance.
Now you guys have me in the mood to play it! I think I will give the Apple IIgs version a try.

It should be noted that each version differs somewhat radically from each other. For example, the Amiga version's difficulty is quite high. C64 version added spys. PC version allows you to transfer men to a party and then move that party, wereas some other versions end your turn after you transfer some men. Some versions (don't know which ones) allow you to fling virus-infested corpses via the catapult. I'm not sure why these decisions were made, but it was likely a quest for the right gameplay balance. An interview with Kellyn Beck might be cool at some point.

I love that game. We used to visit relatives and my cousin had a 8086/8088 with a CGA and playing that game was awesome!

Thanks for the tips on jousting!

Thanks for making that video (and for putting the tips). It was fun to watch.
I had never seen the Tandy 1000 version of Defender of the Crown. Much nicer than the CGA version for sure.
I think the Amiga version is still the nicest version of all though (please correct me if I'm wrong here).

I agree. My best fried used to own an Atari 1040ST and the game had great graphics and music on it.

Being the original and having good graphics hardware under it, it is (IMO) the best looking and among the best sounding. However, it is also the hardest difficulty.

No way is the Amiga version the hardest. I would actually expect it to be the easiest. It's certainly the easiest version I've played. The C64 and Atari ST versions are considerably more challenging and I would go as far as saying that they make the Amiga version seem unfinished in comparison.

Maybe it's my tactics then. If you watch my longplay you can see how I play DOTC... when I tried those tactics on the Amiga version, I lost 6 out of 6 games and gave up. I lost the game sometimes in the first 10 rounds.

From my recollection the path to victory is to get some high yield territories. Then it is import to knock off one of the other Saxons first. The Normans are too strong in the beginning.

Played a few games of the Amiga version on winuae today. Got crushed in all of them. Ouch. I had forgotten how tough this game was...

Once you get the hang of it you will knock them out fast! I played 3 games of the original Civlization yesterday. Very much the same principle. ;)
