Hi - been collecting stuff for a while (to be more correct - not thrown anything away since building my Acorn Atom)

Bob.

Howdy Bob,
I moved toooo many times to save my stuff. Those power supplies in the early S100 machines were HEAVY. I kept giving my old stuff away to friends before I moved. I still have too many computers, even with giving old ones away. You think your memory is pretty good until you have to use it. I looked at a quick reference for CP/M commands the other day and I didn't remember any of them with looking at the crib sheet. So much for great memory.
Anyway, welcome, you will like the crowd here.
Chuck

Hi Bob

Hi Bob

I know the feeling about accumulating. I litterally have truck loads of old computers and parafanalia. I haven't decided if I'm a collector or a pack rat. Welcome aboard.

Hi Bob,

You sound like an old friend of mine from Virginia Beach. He still had every computer he had ever purchased. The last time I spoke with him (1996), he had over 35 computers stashed everywhere in his house. His spare bathroom tub was full of them.

BTW, his wife divorced him ;-)

Good luck with the "collection" and welcome aboard!

35 computers is nothing. I read about someone who had collected about 100 saxophones (which tend to be much more expensive than most vintage computers) - and he couldn't even play the saxophone. He just liked the look. Eventually, his wife divorced him, the bank stopped the mortgage on the house and he had to sell the horns, pay alimony and lose the house.

For the moment, I own more computers than saxophones, and I don't see that will change.

I agree, 35 computers isn't much. This was 10 years ago though. If he is still alive, he probably has twice that amount. The thing is, he doesn't collect them, he just never sells the ones he bought for his own use. He sees a new wiz-bang computer, buys it, and sticks the last one some place where he can find the room.

I think that is where simple collecting (like me) becomes an obsession.

Sort of like me and Amateur Radio. I love ham radio, and have several HF "rigs" (we call radios rigs). I've even building an Elecraft K1 4-band CW-only low power rig to take along with me when I travel (it's very small). As much as I love ham radio, I love computers more. If I had to give up one of the two, ham radio would lose.

The hearing in my left ear is still damaged from listening to my Heathkit "Super het" receiver when I was around 13 years old. I always wore my one earphone on my left side and the high frequency is gone in that ear. Guess it's a good thing I only used one ear.

And yes, I did put the kit together myself. Did a pretty good job except for breaking one of the coils in half trying to get it to fit in the board. I patched it up and got it installed. I do like the smell of burning rosin to this day.

An easy solution to answering that problem is to ask:

How many 486s do I have?

If the answer is <4, then you are a collector.
If the answer is =4, then you are a semi-packrat.
If the answer is >4, then you are a packrat.
:bigups:

Dang, I've only ever had one 486. I'd always considered myself a packrat, but I suppose as the years go by stuff magically becomes vintage, thanks to the inevitable march of time.

Welcome to the forums, bob! Post some more. :p
