Wanted: Apple //gs ROM 3 machine

That shouldn't be TOO hard to find. There are like TONS out there.

I wouldn't mind building up another GS with HD and GS/OS. They were pretty cool!

Tony

I just checked my GS.. sorry.. it's a ROM 01 GS.

BTW... can anyone help me out with getting this machine working? :p

Hi,
Need a bit more information about it. Like what do you mean by getting it working?
Was it ever working? What happened to it? What are you trying to do?

There is a self test with a set of three keys held down all at once to see if there is problem. Will get back to you on what they are.

Take Care,
George

it works perfectly, it seems.. the only real problems are no software, and the monitor (color) is EXTREMELY dim and blurry. Next to impossible for me to read anything with the software I have (copy ][ Plus, and that's about it).

The sad thing is, I found it in a dumpster, and it seems to have more stuff in it than the Amiga 500 I bought for over $75. I am guessing, looking at the number of chips filled into the RAM expander that it has about 2 megs of ram, including the 512k built in. It also looks like at least 4 of the expansion slots are filled, I have no idea about what the majority of them are. It also has 3 floppy drives (2 3.5", 1 5.25")

So, right now it is just taking up space on what used to be my computer repair workbench. I found a copy of GS-OS on Apple's website, but I have no clue as to how to unpack them and put them on disks. Oh well... C'est la vie..

Hi,
It seems that just monitor is need of repair. Adjustments on the back and the side will not fix the problem? The cards inside are worth more than the IIsg, well maybe.
On unpacking the GS/OS you would need an older mac that would one way. Or using the IIgs itself, but with a bad monitor and with out some other software would be hard to impossible.

Take Care,
George

well, I just decided to turn it on a few minutes ago, and leave it on, and after a few minutes, it gets slightly better. The color starts coming to life after a moment or so. The text's still slightly blurry, though. I'll crack her open again soon and try to identify the cards, if you want.

Hi,
There is one on Ebay that is not listed as one, but it is a Rom3 you can see the removeable battery. A dead give away. It is the one with a big 25 sticker on it. If you do get I can tell you how to remove the magic marker or paint.
Better request it because they have others and may not think there is any difference with them.

Here is the URL to cut and paste. Price is cheap, but shipping is bit more than what I think it should be. Not a bad buy.

All right. Before I remove them to try and find some identifying marks, does it matter which slot they go into, or do I have to label them specifically else some bad stuff would happen?

The reason I'm asking this is because I've been looking at some of the disks I found with the computer, and a few of them say things like "TIME ][ -- For slot 4" and the like. Not sure if they are for the same computer, but seeing as this is the only system I saw in the dumpster, but that doesn't mean anything since I sometimes see other, less vintage computer equipment in there

I will also see if I could borrow a digital camera, so that I could take some pictures and upload them to my tripod account

Yes, they do sort of. Soft ware can be set up to look for certain cards in certain slots.
But a most of the slots were a defacto for certain cards. Like one or two were printer cards serail or parallel, or a sound card. 3 was mouse or 80 cols. 4 and 5 were kind of free IMO. 6 and 7 were for bootting drives.

A picture helps remembers where everthing goes.

yeah, I read it..

Jeez.. every time I want to get this done, SOMETHING always comes up.. hopefully tomorrow.. HOPEFULLY!!

ok. I finally got around to inventory my GS. Here's the information I have:

In the memory expansion slot, there is a card labeled "GS 8 plusRAM". It has 56 spaces for RAM chips, out of which 24 are filled.

The card next to it (slot 6) is labelled "HARD DRIVE CONTROLLER - AI Applied Ingenuity - (c) 1989 Made in U.S.A - 1 - P/N 42189". It is hooked into the power supply, and has an LED on it.

Next to that (slot 3) is labelled "TIMEMASTER II PRO - (High Output)". An IC on it is labelled "Copyright 1984 Applied Engineering - Rev HO 1.2". It has a set of DIP switches on it, and what appears to be a buzzer or something.

The next one (slot 1) is labelled "(C) 1990 Quickie Controller P/N 121489 Vitesse Inc.". It has a connector on the back which looks similar to the printer connector.

Between slots 4 and 5, there is a completely unlabelled card connected to a connector near the RAM expansion slot. It has a port which looks like a speaker port.

The Power Supply is labelled "InnerDrive 40 - High Performance Hard Disk System - This equipment complies with FCC rules part yadda yadda yadda, blah blah blah, et cetera. Hazardous Voltages - No user servicable parts inside.". I kinda doubt this PSU is stock :p

Anywho, that is all the info I have on it. Is it worth the hernia I got dragging it home?

Hi,

Here what you have.

In the memory expansion slot, there is a card labeled "GS 8 plusRAM". It has 56 spaces for RAM chips, out of which 24 are filled.

Ram Card, Name does not ring a bell like Sirus, PaceMart or others.

The card next to it (slot 6) is labelled "HARD DRIVE CONTROLLER - AI Applied Ingenuity - (c) 1989 Made in U.S.A - 1 - P/N 42189". It is hooked into the power supply, and has an LED on it.

This is more like a Vulcan set like Applied Enginering. A bit rare.

Next to that (slot 3) is labelled "TIMEMASTER II PRO - (High Output)". An IC on it is labelled "Copyright 1984 Applied Engineering - Rev HO 1.2". It has a set of DIP switches on it, and what appears to be a buzzer or something.

A clock. Some people like them for doing the files on a IIe. But the IIgs has its own clock. So why would they need another one?

The next one (slot 1) is labelled "(C) 1990 Quickie Controller P/N 121489 Vitesse Inc.". It has a connector on the back which looks similar to the printer connector.

This is for a hand scanner.

Between slots 4 and 5, there is a completely unlabelled card connected to a connector near the RAM expansion slot. It has a port which looks like a speaker port.

Looks like it is a sound like board, or for Hyper Card,Hyper Studio input.

The Power Supply is labelled "InnerDrive 40 - High Performance Hard Disk System - This equipment complies with FCC rules part yadda yadda yadda, blah blah blah, et cetera. Hazardous Voltages - No user servicable parts inside.". I kinda doubt this PSU is stock :p

What is is worth? Maybe around $120.00 if all works. But if the HD or the controller is toast, then a lot less.

The IIgs CPU is not that heavy. Unless it is attached to solid gold table or desk. If you are interested in selling it let me know and we will see waht we can do.

Take Care

yeah.. unless I have a second one, with the same memory expansion and HDD controller, I ain't selling it :p

Either way.. is there any sort of utility or program built into the ROM that allows me to check out and see if all the stuff is working?

Hi,
Nothing, built in will check everthing. There is a self check for the IIgs itself. One old MECC program that might ID the cards in the slots.
Not sure if you need any special software (drivers) for the HD and controller.
That being said, You should be able to acess the HD a couple of ways. First set the control pannel to boot that slot the controller is in. If that works look in the system for any different folders or Drivers that are not with GS/OS 6.0 or 6.01.
If you can not boot with the slot setting than try booting with GS/OS disk and see if it sees the HD.
IF all this fail, try using CopyII+ any of them but 9.0, 9.0 had bugs. To see if you can see the HD and its contents.
The other 3 utilties, that repair and do more for HDs are, Prosel, Deliverence, and I believe Universe Master.
Take it slow so you do not lose anything important.

Take Care

hmm... I guess eBay will get me those. I thought I had CopyII+, but I can't find it at this moment. Oh well
