I have the opportunity to buy a complete 5150 in all of its oringinal boxes and with all original software and manuals and a compaq portable. Can someone give me an idea of what such a system is worth? It is on my local craigslist. The guy doesnt seem to know what he has collectability wise, as he bought both these machines brand new back in the day. Here are pictures of the 5150's original boxes. This will be a GREAT addition to my collection.

If you say he "doesn't seem to know what he has", that suggests it's already a good price? :D

Well, He wants 100$ for each of the machines. I really dont want to rip him off though.

Keep in mind there are a lot of unknowns. You didn't point to the craigslist ad, but I am guessing there would not be much more information. For example, we see the boxes, but is it really in good cosmetic condition? Is it reasonably complete and intact? Do the boxes even contain anything? Is it actually a 5150 and not a 5160? Is the Compaq actually the first model or a later one? Is the software complete with disks? I'd bet the seller doesn't know either. Additionally, a lot of items like this will not usually sell for the full value of each of the individual parts. Also keep in mind that since this is craigslist he is saving on eBay fees and packaging hassle.

Off hand, I'd say $100 for each is probably fair enough for these reasons. In the off chance you open it up and it turns out to be a perfect condition model "A" or something then throw him an extra hundred.

He said on my phone conversation that he bought the compaq portable in 1983, so im assuming that it is the first model. And yes, there is little to no information on the craigslist ad. I will be going to look at it tomorrow or saturday.
