Still going through some recently acquired TRS-80 items... I powered this thing on and got "Diskette?" at the prompt. Is this normal? Without disks, is there anything else I can do? It came in the original box too with a printer cable and the owner's manual... kind of cool. It looks like the original owner was carving the top disk slot (see picture)... not sure what he/she was doing?

You can press break when turning it on to get into the cassette Basic. Its asking for a boot diskette and thats a pretty good sign that the majority of the computer is functional.

A gate array Model 4. Nice system BTW. Don't know is going on with that top drive though!?

Possibility I may be parting out a Model 4 Gate array. It has a bad display board but all else is fine. So I might have a disk drive available if interested.

Just do not want to put anymore money into it. Seeing though I have another one any way.

As mlaferriere mentioned, hitting Break at startup or reset will get you into Model III cassette basic. Otherwise you need some DOS disks to do anything interesting. You can get a set of Model 4 system disks from Ira at http://www.trs-80.com for a small donation.

It looks like someone was trying to pry out the top floppy drive without opening the case!! Which means it may not be working.
