GEOS v2.0

Greetings.

Does anyone know if GEOS v2.0 came on 5 1/4" diskette? I have it on 3.5". I purchased a "New - GEORAM 512 RAM Expansion Unit by Berkeley Softworks for Commodore 64 & 128" cartridge from eBay and it requires GEOS v2.0r. I have the GEOS v2.0r but not the System Backup disk on 5 1/4" diskette. To get it to run it needs the System Backup disk to read a serial number from it. This is what the seller told me.

I've tried to copy the 3.5" System Backup diskette to 5 1/4" using Copy II 64 and Super 81 Utilities but had no luck, and I just learned the "COPY" command only works with a dual drive unit. I could be doing something wrong with these tools; if you know how I can do this with these tools please let me know.

Does anyone know how I can copy a 3.5" diskette to 5 1/4" diskette? Or does anyone have a set of GEOS v2.0 on 5 1/4" that you could part with or make me a copy and I'd pay shipping???

Thanks

Weird, both versions I had (bought new, retail, back when) were on 5 1/4" disk. I don't even know that I remember them selling it on 3 1/2" for the 1581, but I guess it would make sense that they would. GEOS ran so well on the 1581 stuff.

You can't copy a 1581 disk directly to a 1541/1571 disk, only the files (which would be tricky for GEOS without a VLIR-aware file copy utility). Unknown_K's suggestion is the best solution.

Same. The fact that he's looking for a System Backup disk implies he's got a copy there, not an original (BSW embedded serials into the original and backup GEOS system disks as a means of copy protection, though this is now trivial to get around).

I got the GEOS 2.0 on 3.5" recently when I bought a 1581 drive.

I'll check the site Unknown_K mentioned.

I am not familiar with Wraptor'd files. On this site I click on a file (G6441.WR3) and expect to download it; instead I see ==>

It's like I was vi'ing a binary file. So do I do a ctrl-a and download this ascii data into a file, get familiar with Wraptor and run Wraptor against the ascii file that I ctrl-a'd and downloaded to create a boot diskette? Totally unfamiliar with this process, but can learn. ;-)

Thanks

Wraptor files are binary. They're a way of encoding VLIR files in a single sequential file extent (analogous to MacBinary for Mac files with resource forks). You get Wraptor and run it against the .WR3 file, and you get a GEOS VLIR file out the other end.

Hello ClassicHasClass.

Ok what's confusing me is I'm not familiar with downloading files from the site: (example files below)

G6441.WR3 (57K) - for the 64 with 1541 drive
G6471.WR3 (58K) - for the 64 with 1571 drive
G6481.WR3 (57K) - for the 64 with 1581 drive
G12841.WR3 (74K) - for the 128 with 1541 drive
G12871.WR3 (74K) - for the 128 with 1571 drive
G12881.WR3 (73K) - for the 128 with 1581 drive

When I left click a file G6441.WR3 (57K) I expect the .WR3 to download like a zip file but it just displays the binary data in my browser. So obviously left clicking the above files is not the correct way to download these files.

So how do I download these *.WR3 files like a zip instead of just getting the contents of the file displayed in my browser?

Thanks

Most web browsers have a "save target as" option. With Windows based browsers, right click on the link and choose the mentioned menu item.

Hmm that may be what I'm doing wrong. I did a File menu and Save As not right click and Save target as.

I'll get back and let you know.

Thanks

Guess I've been stuck in the PC world too long. ;-)

Well I learned how to use Wraptor - interesting vintage tool.

Also bought a set of GEOS v2.0 on 5 1/4" diskette. Will someone clue me how to make a backup copy of these diskettes? I did use Star Commander and the XM1541 cable to make images to a PC, but when I copied them back to a new diskette the stupid things wouldn't boot. I even tried Copy II 64 and Super 81 Utilities - NO BOOTing. ;-( I know GEOS v1.2 has a tool on the desktop "Backup" to make a backup copy of GEOS 1.2, but didn't see it for the v2.0 desktop. Is it on some other diskette? I spent a little time on it, and will get back to it.

And'a Star Commander is really fairly easy and slick to use - very nice! Thanks to all that shared this and the XM1541 cable solution. It's really great when you can interface a PC with computers that speak a different language.

Well I used the method outlined in the GEOS v2.0 online manual and it works great for other disks, but NOT the System disk.

Is there a simple way to make backup copies of these diskettes without having to spend $100 + on a solution?

Well I just tried Anadisk (cost $2.65 from Retro Computing <help@retrocomputing.org) and it didn't work. An error says "your diskette is either blank or unreadable) - which is not the case.

Ran it on a P3. Didn't have to configure Anadisk per the screens. Apparently it cannot read Commodore disks in an IBM AT compatiable drive; hence the error.

I'll try Teledisk, but NOT paying any dinero for it this time.

Thanks Stone.

I'll wait for Chuck's response but I believe Anadisk should be able to read anything. I know I've used it to copy some rather bizarre OS disks. :)

Somebody suggested to me to run the adconfig.exe tool.

I did run the adconfig utility, but went through it fast - perhaps too fast. The initial screen said something to the effect of if you have an IBM AT with any kind of 5 1/4" diskette configuration press Esc to continue, so I did. I'll look take another look at the adconfig.exe again.

Thanks!
