Hi Everyone

Just a quick message to say hello.

My "collection" of older computers, if you can call it a collection, comprises a Toshiba T3200SX (386) and a HP OmniBook 5700CT (Pentium 166 MMX). Oh, and a Sinclair Spectrum +2 which is languishing somewhere in the loft at my parents' house along with all the other stuff I keep promising to clear out.

I bought the T3200SX as a distraction-free writing tool. I didn't have attention issues before ADSL came along, but since always-on Internet came along it has been my productivity nemesis. I owned a T3200SX in the 90s and love the keyboard and orange gas plasma display. The OmniBook was a cheap purchase for my kids to run old educational software on, but they've outgrown it and so I now use it as distraction-free PC number 2 for those times when the Toshiba isn't quite portable enough (a.k.a. hernia avoidance). Both are running MS-DOS 6.22 and Microsoft Word 5.5 which is a perfect combination for my needs and, thanks to Mike Brutman's excellent mTCP suite, I can easily copy documents using FTP.

Inevitably the nostalgia factor has led me to tinker with both PCs far more than I planned to, which is why I'm here. My first project involves replacing the Toshiba's HDD with a CF card, using the XTIDE BIOS to overcome the restrictive HDD settings. The current Conner Peripherals soundtrack makes me nervous every time I start it up.

Looking forward to spending some time on here...

Tim.

Thanks for the welcome. I do seem to be in danger of moving from "I bought this because I have a genuine use for it" and into "I bought this because it looked interesting" :).

Hi, well I am currently in Torrox, Costa Del Sol, Spain, but will be back in Manchester Sunday, where I spend the majority of my time.

The 3200SX is a it of a swine with the restrictive disk settings. I remember searching high and low for a working disk.

Best of luck with your endeavours.

We have tried to have vintage meets, rather than vintage gaming meets in Manchester, but to date not enough people.

Good luck with the 3200SX. I have one too and I also use it for writing - lovely keyboard and I like the orange plasma screen.

Post back here with your experiences of modifying it. I think there's a BIOS image somewhere that removes the restrictions, which should help a little. I'd love to make mine silent one day - it's on the list of things to do...
