Hello All,

So this is a question on the Server version of LAN Manager not the commonly found client. Does anyone have experience with this SW? I am trying to determine if the server version supports SMP. Googling has not been very helpful. Some sources seem to indicate version 2.0 supported SMP while others refer to specific OEM versions having SMP support (i.e. a Compaq version for the SystemPro). Can anyone confirm if 2.0 had SMP support built in or does it have to be an OEM specific version? TIA!

Version 2.0 supports asymmetrical multiprocessing not SMP and that only on specially modified version running on specific systems. Adding InfoWorld to searches should allow tracking of when it was developed.

Right I mean asymmetric. This article seems to indicate it was in version 2.0 where as other sources refer to a Compaq specific version.

If it is Compaq specific it may be next to impossible to find.

As an aside do you know if a version exist that supported SMP? i.e. for the SystemPro XL (which had SMP support) or any other SMP capable system or was it NT by then?

SystemPro was the first. I think a couple of other systems also had ASMP versions; NetFrame comes to mind but check the magazines to be sure. Version 2.1 and 2.2 had wider support running on a number SMP servers but operating asymmetrically.

I do not believe there was a generic multiprocessing release until NT 3.5. Even for NT 3.1, the SMP kernels were only available through the vendor.

Thanks. I can get NT going but I would really like to get a DOS dual processor file server setup - and before you ask because I can ;)

Well some slight progress - I now have a product name Compaq LAN Manager 386/486. Still have not actually seen it available any where or seen any price lists in old ads so I am not sure if it ever went into production.

As far as SMP vs. ASMP the issue depends on which Systempro you are talking about: The original Systempro used ASMP and was supported (limitedly) by OS/2 and NT 3.1 (had a special HAL so could even have an ASMP 386 machine) but the Systempro XL was a SMP compliant machine.
