So I recently got a nice apple II machine up and running but my only software is a 1987 tax program. I thought the IIE would have a lot of exclusives but it looks like most games got superior ports to other systems. Can anyone recommend some IIE exclusives or titles that jyst plat best, have the most features on the IIe?

Beyond Castle Wolfenstein (the game that famous first person shooter was named after but doesn't really resemble) is in my opinion the ultimate Apple ][ game.

I was never much of a gamer, but that was the best one I had for the Apple ][.

My all time favorite "dungeon crawler" game is Wizardry. I believe it came out first on Apple II (I got it for my original Apple Iic) and, yes it was ported to other platforms, but I never played it on anything else except the Apple, and later the Macintosh version.

I would love to get a version that would run properly from SSD, but since it's on the Apple Pascal system, perhaps that's only a pipe dream.

If you like RPGs there is no shortage of them on Apple IIs, including:
Ultima I - IV
Bards Tale
Legacy of the Ancients
Legend of Blacksilver
Questron I - II

Also: Lode Runner (my all-time favorite) Boulder Dash and Jumpman

I think all of these came out first on the Apple II and were ported to the other systems.

One of my favorite Apple ][ games back in the day when it was new was Temple of Apshai. Not exclusive to the Apple ][, versions for other systems came first.

Yhea buy from looking it seems like the apple II versions are always inferior. I'm really looking for games that are either exclusives or for whatever reason look/play best on the apple II and there doesn't seem to be many.

I thought Pinball Construction Set looked pretty cool when I first saw that demoed at an Apple dealer back in the day. I never owned a copy myself back then. While that was originally developed for the Apple ][ first, it was ported to other systems so it's not an exclusive.

The Apple IIe has a TON of exclusives, or games that were "born" on it and play best on it. You could play one decent game per week until the rest of your life. Here are some of the seminal, or "born here" games, for the Apple II:

Choplifter
Airheart
Bilestoad
Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein
Karateka
Prince of Persia
Lode Runner
The Oregon Trail
Spare Change
Lemonade Stand
The first five Ultima games, with 4 and 5 being the best IMO
Pinball Construction Set
Music Construction Set

A random sampling of games I remember being very fun, impressive on the hardware, or both:

Archon
Beach-head
Stellar 7
Robotron (amazing port of the arcade game)
Moon Patrol
Night Mission Pinball
Spy Hunter
Adventure Construction Set
The first three Wizardry games (the 4th is crazy difficult)
Wasteland
Summer Games, Winter Games, World Games, California Games
