The Gateway 2000 Version of the Intel Advanced / ZP Motherboard has no L2 Cake on it. It also has two PS/2 Connectors in place of the 5 DIN Keyboard connector. The regular Intel version has 256k Cake soldered on to the board, and a regular 5 DIN Connector. I was wondering, since I don't want to risk my board without knowing, there are solder spots where they forgot to put the cake and where the 5 din connector should be. Can I just find out what chips Intel used for the cake and solder them on and have a board with cake, then solder a 5 din in place of the PS/2 to make it fully AT compatible? After All Most AT boards didn't have a mouse connector you had to use a serial mouse. Do you guys think it would work? I'm sure mouser has the chips I need I just don't know if it would work.

The 5 pin AT keyboard connector is identical electrically to the PS/2 keyboard so yes you could solder an AT connector to the motherboard. Might require some case alteration to ensure there is room. I think it is better to track down an AT to PS/2 adapter. PS/2 keyboards are newer and a lot more common these days and it would be silly having a PS/2 keyboard going to an adapter to go to the AT connector you soldered on the system. Also, depending on OS, you may well find the PS/2 mouse more useful than a serial mouse. Saves serial port for other things and some OSes dropped support for serial mice pretty early.

Intel's motherboard manual http://tulrich.com/tectrixvr/intel_pba-638995_manual.pdf lists the type of cache chips used. Not only will you need the correct sockets, you also need the jumpers to set the value. Well, the manual talks about jumpers in the cache section but I can't see an explanation for setting them in Appendix B so I am confused.

No, but it has come to my attention that most of the opinions and ideas that I have held closely my entire life regarding computers are not shared by most members of this community. Regarding pronunciations, security, even what OS gets paired with what processor. I am EXTREMELY set in my ways and do not like change so you telling me its not cake, is like telling me that DVD-Rs are obsolete and that everybody restores windows with a flash drive.

I'm sorry Stone. I didn't mean to be snappy. I just feel like my whole life is falling apart. Finding out its "Cash" not "Cake"! Do you realize how many people I told in the late 90s that COAST stood for Cake On a Stick and they did the homer-thought-bubble-drool impression... "MMMMM Cake on a stick aaaaaghhhhhh"? I must have looked like a complete idiot. But I know what I am talking about. Computers have been my life since 1995. And since becoming active here, I've found out its not Cake, that "motorized floppy drives" are called "electronic eject", that the Pentium pre ceeded Windows 95, That most people prefer FM Synth over Wavetable Samples, that most tandy 1000 buyers opted for no hard drive, and that most other people actually hate Trinitron / aperture grille displays. All these things ive held as close religious-like beliefs have been completely the opposite and its like I turned from a computer genius to John Snow and know nothing.
