I have a Tyan S5502 Motherboard Intel 3420 chipset. 6 DIMM slots but only 2 channels.
CPU is an Intel X3460 XEON Quad core 8 thread socket LGA-1156 CPU.
RAM is HP part with Micron RAM 4GB 2Rx4 PC3-10600R Registered ECC RAM.

Installing 1 DIMM A1 just gives me error beeps. Installing 2 DIMMs A1 + B1 as stated in the manual gives me no beeps but doesn't boot.
Using generic PC3 non registered non ECC RAM boots but has issues. Using 2 DIMMs in A1 + B1 shows only 1GB RAM (using 2 1GB DIMMS). Going A1 + A2 shows 2GB. Either way it crashes hard on Windows 7 install (BSOD) during setup at random points.

I was under the impression you needed REG ECC RAM for XEONs, is that true?

Check for bent pins in the CPU socket.

I've used regular DDR3 (non-ECC) on socket 1366 Xeons, so it should be fine for the LGA 1156 ones.

For the Xeon based board I'm awaiting delivery on, yes. All, maybe. You need to research your mb. Mine needs fb ecc ddr2 (fully buffered). It seems these boards can be picky, hence the aformentioned tested memory list. Sometimes you need to populate certain slots first. Some proprietary memory is just that, proprietary.

I got a sweet deal on 16gb (4 x 4) 667mhz dimms. Vendors are Samsung, Micron, or Hynix. Wish me luck. Sounds promising but none were on the list for this mb. Brand new and 17$ I said what the hey..

Never had a problem with DDR2 in an Opteron or XEON and it is dirt cheap.

Anyway I did get the generic DDR3 1GB DIMMs to come up as 2GB (in the A1 B1 slots) and I found out my BSOD was cause by my HD4650 Radeon (pulled out of a working system too).

So windows 7 installed and functions, just need to fill the other RAM slots to something usable. Normal DDR3 is still kind of expensive, was hoping server RAM (much cheaper would work).
