Got a generic 486 DX2 66 desktop today. Used a 20% off eBay coupon. Has a ODIN DS12887 clone CMOS chip. Just my luck. :)

Should have used it to buy my favorite dress shoes instead.

Anyway: going to take it apart; clean it and install my Pentium 100 with MOBO. Will need to test the CD-ROM, FDD, HDD and CT2800 it came with.

Spent 90 minutes. Swapped the MOBOs. HDDs and FDDs would not work. Bad PSU. Swapped it out. Now boots FDD. I LLF-ed the IDE HDD. Will install MS-DOS 6.22 tomorrow. CD-ROM may be dead. Will try again tomorrow. And test the CT2800.

Update: CT2800 works great. Getting the case power on button to work with the replacement PSU was quite a mission. But I got it working in the end. Dropped the modem. Waiting for COM1 to arrive from CN. Will need to order LPT1 as well.

Machine came with a CL-5426 16BIT ISA VGA PCB. Struggles with Duke Nukem 3D 800X600. No surprise there.

Interesting.

All my desktop models of any computer, including 486, 386, and 286 had all major components on-board, (with an exception for the video on my 286, it needs a card for video output but all other major components and ports were on-board).

I'd recommend blowing that dust out with some compressed air, because it looks like a very dusty affair right now.

Hopefully that will make a great machine for the original doom, early multi-media games, etc.

Yep. Washed the 486 VLB MOBO. Waiting for it to dry. Will try it with a replacement IBM PS/ValuePoint P60/D PSU I ordered. Should be here Friday. MOBO should be dry by then. The case has already been cleaned thoroughly.
