Mac and monitors...

I started as an Apple guy. I want to get back into some of the older Mac stuff for fun.

Aside from wanting a Mac Classic, I'd like to pick up a newish older Mac.

When did Apple make it possible to use standard monitors?

I use a KVM switch, and would like to still do so, so I want to find the first line of Mac products that used standard monitors...

Standard = VGA compatible? Read this article:

So technically, anything from Mac LC (16 MHz '020, 1990) and upwards should work but you would need an adapter of some sorts. If you want a Mac that has a native VGA connector, I think you'd move into PowerPC land which is out of scope for this forum.

I think the B&W G3 started using video cards with VGA connectors.

As far as using a KVM, even if you have a VGA connection for video you still need to have a PS2 port or USB port for modern PC type KVMs to work, and older Macs will not have those ports.

You can get older Mac KVMs that use ADB ports but they also tend to have the older Apple video cable connections.

You can buy an adapter, I have a 15M/DF010p. It was a few bucks (plus shipping). You should be able to use that with older Macs and VGA monitors. If you want I can post a picture of what it looks like and the User's Manual.
