Not sure just how 'vintage' a Backpack is (last used one on a P166 Itronix laptop), but the skills needed (read: willingness to possibly destroy in order to restorate or modify) are the same...pop open the case! If you see a normal ATAPI IDE-CD ROM drive and cable (easiest way to verify is to google the drive model number), nothing should be harmed by hooking up a CD-RW in it's place. Now comes the tricky part; do the drivers provide a full ATAPI interface, and how is it presented to applications? If you are lucky, the drive is simply presented as a drive that was previously Read-only. If not, you can try alternate OS's to see if any of them treat the device differently...
