I don't use Win98. But on my Taskbar
I've got a small little speaker icon.
Clicking on this brings up the Master
Out controls. You can the Master Out
there to reduce the volume.

Try: Start >Settings >Control Panel >Multimedia

The "Show Volume Control on Taskbar" button is right there.

Terry,...YOU THE MAN ! Thank's I was looking under "sounds" in control panel,go figure.I went to multimedia and the button for "show speaker icon in tray"was not active,I changed the preferred playback setting from "use any device" to my playback device and the button worked! My little speaker is back in tray!Has happened before,I have real one player and windows player and seems they clash once and a while,I guess I should pick one and remove the other.I've made a note on my CPU with permanant ink -"MULTIMEDIA" for sound control icon-.I owe you one ,thank's

I beleive it is a conflict with having two(or more)media players,(i.e. windows/realplayer) installed. If you set (two or more)players to "Play all media types", they both open at the same time and then it's CRASH AND BURN TIME!.

Yep, I've encountered the same thing, and I think it depends on which card and in particular which set of drivers one is using. Thanks for showing us clueless people the checkbox though.

Oh, it was the sound icon which had
disappeared, I thought it was the sound which
had gone! Oh well, no harm done! ;-)
