So I picked up a nice older PC (386 I think... I can't see the CPU). When I tried to connect the video cable (15 pins), it didn't match the connection on the video card (9 pins):

I had another video card but it is much longer (still from the same era though). The card fit but part of it stuck out and simply sat on the chips on the motherboard. The machine has DOS 5.0 on it and the prompt came up but the screen wouldn't scroll at all once you got to the bottom.

I'm not sure what kind of video card I need... obviously a shorter one that connects to a modern 15 pin video cable.
Any suggestions?
